China is home to one of the world’s oldest continuous civilizations. Kites were invented in China about 3,000 years ago and were originally used for military signaling, or scaring your enemies!
Gunpowder (or fire medicine) was also invented in China. Originally a mixture of things used as medicine, gunpowder was initially used to kill insects and treat skin diseases.
When fireworks were developed they were (and still are) used to ward off evil spirits. This led to the the development of fire lances, the earliest form of guns.
