Here at Pride Lands, we want the best for as many children in the Wellington region as we can reach.
One issue we’ve been thinking about is how to help get more children attending school and engaged in class. We do our one-on-one support and mentoring for specific kids who are struggling at school, but what if we could help lots of kids at once?
Kids of all ages love the activities and games we run during many of the Pride Lands childcare services, so why not do the same in schools? We call it the Pride Lands Enrichment Programme for Schools.
Our activities coordinators and mentors come out to your school – Primary, Intermediate or Secondary – and run fun, physical, imaginative games and activities for your students. We accept and include all children. We are experts at working with kids who are neurodiverse, anxious, non-binary, have behavioural struggles or just don’t engage.
Meet our …
… Activities Coordinators
Pride Lands staff who are great at dreaming up, organising and running really fun games and activities.
They don’t just pick from a list of things they have done before either. Part of what makes Pride Lands different is that our games and activities are often made up on the spot to fit the mood of the young people and the environment. They are fresh and exciting and designed to get kids mentally and physically involved and engaged.
… Mentors
As well as doing everything that our Activities Coordinators do, Pride Lands Mentors are trained and highly experienced in working with and helping children who face challenges of any kind.
During an Enrichment Programme, our Mentors will be concentrating on the kids who often don’t make it to school, cause problems in class, or who use a device all day and don’t engage.
We can run our Engagement Programmes at times that suit you and your school best. Before school and during breaks often works best, but we can tailor it to your school’s needs.
Our programmes can be run with specific groups of students, with individual classes, or in a way that benefits the whole school. Engagement can range from doing 15-30 minutes in each class, through to doing one to two hours with all students at once. Contact us to discuss what might work best at your school.
We’ve seen great results from the programmes we have run at several schools. Attendance improves, engagement during class increases and kids want to come to school.
The other aim of our Enrichment Programme is to give teachers and teacher aides some of the skills and tools that they need to carry on the good work once we are gone. This includes both engaging kids with fun games and activities, and techniques for working with more challenging students. We have schools that initially had us visit and run programmes regularly, and now get us back once or twice a year for a refresher.
Making school fun again, especially for hard to reach kids.
